More is definitely more in this case, as players follow individual storylines and take side missions, some exclusive to each character. Eight years later, Spider-Man takes on the villain Mister Negative, working to stop his plans to control New York City’s criminal underworld. Using Spider-Man’s ability to shoot webs and sling himself around New York, players follow Peter’s story while fighting villains along the way. Like the comics and film adaptations, Spider-Man takes on the responsibility of protecting New York City from the bad guys.

It’s a game about web-slinging and fistfights, sure, but it’s also about sacrifice and redemption, and every mile of its gorgeously-textured New York teems with human stories that redefine what heroism means.
In a story ultimately all about the emotional stakes and the cast’s relationships with each other, the actual personalities are remarkably flat. Almost everyone fills essentially the same role (Incredibly Nice Genius) and the addition of Miles’ supporting cast means there’s twice as many of them chattering at you. This time the superheroes must face two primary villains – Kraven the Hunter and Venom. Of course, a hero is nothing without its villains, and Spider-Man’s rogues gallery is almost unparalleled. Outside of the likes of Venom, Kraven, and Lizard seen in the trailers, Insomniac has kept many more cards hidden up its sleeve. I won’t even hint at any of these except to say that Spider-Man 2 opens with a bang, offering up a sense of scale not previously seen in the series. It’s an adrenaline-fuelled reintroduction to the series that tests how well you remember the combat, as well as providing a few new tricks. It’s also the start of one of the new side-story villain threads that are optional, and while those don’t offer anything overly new in terms of gameplay, they do add valuable extra scraps of story.

Peter takes the symbiote to Oscorp to destroy it, but a desperate Harry intercepts him and reclaims it, transforming into a monstrous creature. After slaughtering Oscorp staff trying to remove the symbiote from him, the symbiote-induced Harry escapes into Times Square, where he defeats several of Kraven’s Hunters before overpowering and killing Kraven himself. The symbiote convinces Harry to “heal the world” by infecting everyone on Earth with symbiotes, starting with New York. Dubbing themselves “Venom”, Harry and the symbiote transform Mary Jane into Scream, but Peter helps her break free after battling and reconciling with her.
After a misunderstanding with the law, Miles questions what it means to be a hero when people are ready to believe the worst in you. Tempted by the power and freedom of his new abilities, Miles must decide what kind of Spider-Man he wants to be. S8 is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in Marvel’s New York. At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of millions of New Yorkers rest upon his shoulders.
